Google Launches Cloud Compute Engine, Enhances Google Apps, Drive

Google is stepping up its game in the infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) space by introducing Google Compute Engine for hosting applications on the company's massive computing infrastructure.

Compute Engine, which Google said June 28 is available as a limited preview for now, was introduced on the second day of the Google I/O 2012 developer s conference in San Francisco. Also revealed were new capabilities in various Google Apps products that can now be integrated with the recently released Google Drive for cloud storage. Google also detailed updates to the Chrome Web browser and the Chrome operating system.

Google already offers App Engine, which enables application developers to create their own applications and have Google host them in its data centers. App Engine currently hosts more than 1 million apps. Compute Engine is intended to serve a wider audience, said Urs H lzle, senior vice president of technical infrastructure at Google.

H lzle demonstrated Compute Engine's capabilities with the example of the Institute for Systems Biology, a research organization that tests potential new cancer drugs against the human genome. He explained that the Institute's own data center has only 1,000 compute cores for processing these tests, which is too slow. Access to Compute Engine increased that to 10,000 cores.

But then H lzle went further: "We know that some of you need even more scale and we have the technology to help in instances that are very computationally intensive, but don t need that much input/output ."

In that instance, the capacity for the Institute project could reach more than 770,000 cores, of which the project used 600,000.

"That is how infrastructure-as-a-service is supposed to work," he said.

Other Google executives shared updates on Google Apps for creating and managing documents, spreadsheets and presentations, all of which can now be stored in the cloud with Google Drive, which the company launched about 10 weeks ago.

Google Drive enables collaboration among various people on Google documents and other content from different computers, said Sundar Pichai, senior vice president of Chrome and Apps at Google.

He shared a humorous video imagining how the pop music duo Hall & Oates would have written the lyrics to one of their hits, "Maneater," in a document on Google Drive with Darryl Hall writing one suggested line and John Oates erasing it and suggesting another.

"This is a fundamental and radically different way to collaborate. Try doing that with SharePoint," said Pichai, taking a dig at rival Microsoft's SharePoint document collaboration software.

The company said at the conference that Google Drive is now available on Apple's iOS mobile operating system; it s already available on Windows, Mac and Chrome OS.

US man critical after chimp attack in S. Africa

By DONNA BRYSON
Associated Press

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - In the six years he's managed a sanctuary for abused and orphaned chimpanzees, South African conservationist Eugene Cussons is from time to time called on to comment when an ape elsewhere in the world attacks a human. Cussons says he could always pinpoint a moment of taunting or perceived aggression that could have set off the quick and powerful animals.

This time, though, the attack was at his own Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden in eastern South Africa. And Cussons, host of the Animal Planet show "Escape to Chimp Eden," is without an explanation.

In telephone interview Saturday, Cussons said he would have to wait until the severely injured victim, a University of Texas at San Antonio anthropology graduate student who was inspired by famed primatologist Jane Goodall to study chimps, was well enough to provide details on what sparked Thursday's attack.

It was the first such attack since Cussons, working with Goodall's renowned international institute, converted part of his family's game farm into the sanctuary in 2006.

"You can train for it, you can do your best to prepare," Cussons said. "But when it actually happens, it's shocking and traumatic for everyone."

Cussons's team quickly evacuated the dozen tourists to whom Andrew F. Oberle had been giving a lecture and tried to separate the chimps from Oberle. In the end, Cussons, who was himself attacked by a chimp as he tried to pull it off Oberle, took the extreme step of firing into the air, scaring the animals away.

Oberle was bitten repeatedly and dragged for nearly a kilometer (half mile). Cussons said one of the chimps was injured in the scuffle, and he was awaiting a veterinarian's report to determine the nature and extent of the injury. No one else was hurt.

Male chimps can stand up to 1.7 meters (5 feet, 7 inches) tall and weigh about 70 kilograms (154 pounds), according to the Jane Goodall institute. The two chimps that attacked Oberle were male, though the sanctuary's website did not say how large those animals were.

Cussons said it was the first time he had asked Oberle to speak to visitors. The student had arrived last month for a follow-up study visit after an extended stay to observe the chimps a year or so ago, Cussons said. As a researcher, Cussons said Oberle had been trained to ensure he understood how the animals might behave and knew to keep a safe distance. Cussons said Oberle was given additional training before addressing the tour group.

Cussons said Oberle broke the rules by going through the first of two fences that separate humans from the chimps. The chimps then grabbed him and pulled him under the second fence, which is electrified. Cussons said it was unclear why Oberle had moved so dangerously close.

Only after Oberle is well enough to talk will investigators "be able to find out why he crossed the safety fence to go on to the main fence," Cussons said.

Mediclinic Nelspruit hospital said Saturday that the 26-year-old Oberle remained in critical condition in intensive care. Oberle underwent surgery at the hospital Thursday.

Cussons said Saturday that Oberle's mother was on her way to South Africa. Oberle's mother, Mary Flint of St. Louis, said Friday that chimpanzees have been her son's passion since seventh grade, when he watched a film about Goodall.

Goodall, a Cambridge University-trained ethnologist, began studying chimpanzees in Tanzania's Gombe National Park in 1960. Since 1994, her institute has been involved in conservation programs across Africa. The institute says its Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in Congo is the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in Africa.

Flint said Oberle knew the risks of working with chimps and would not want them blamed for the attack.

"He adored them," she said. "Since he was a little boy he just loved them, and I just have faith that ... when all is said and done, he's going to go right back into it."

The sanctuary has been closed to tourists since the attack, while government and police officials investigate. The Jane Goodall Institute South Africa is conducting its own investigation.

"Everyone at Chimp Eden is hurting," Cussons said, saying the thoughts of staff members were with Oberle and his family.

Cussons said the two chimps that attacked Oberle, Amadeus and Nikki, had been isolated in their night pens since the attack. He said they were calm and exhibiting remorse, which he said chimps show by behaving submissively.

Human-animal contact is kept to a minimum at the sanctuary, designed as a haven for chimpanzees, which are not native to South Africa, that have been rescued from elsewhere in Africa. Some lost their parents to poachers in countries where they are hunted for their meat or to be sold as pets, and others were held in captivity in cruel conditions.

"They come here and we rehabilitate them by giving them space ... and contact with their own kind," Cussons said. According to the sanctuary's website, one of the chimps involved in the attack, Amadeus, was orphaned in Angola and brought to South Africa in 1996, where he was kept at the Johannesburg Zoo until the sanctuary opened. The other, Nikki, came from Liberia in 1996 and also was held at the zoo until becoming among the first chimps at the sanctuary. Before arriving in South Africa, Nikki, whose parents were killed for their meat, had been treated like a son by his owners, who dressed him in clothes, shaved his body and taught him to eat at a table using cutlery, the website said.

In the United States, a Connecticut woman, Charla Nash, was attacked in 2009 by a friend's chimpanzee that ripped off her nose, lips, eyelids and hands before being killed by police. The woman was blinded and has had a face transplant. Lawyers for Nash filed papers this week accusing state officials of failing to seize the animal before the mauling despite a warning that it was dangerous.

Authorities identify federal agents in Mexico City's airport drug trafficking ring

MEXICO CITY - A Mexican official has identified two federal police officers who shot dead three of their colleagues at Mexico City's international airport this week and who allegedly are part of a cocaine trafficking ring that brought the drugs from Peru.

Federal police regional security chief Luis Cardenas Palomino says the slain officers were trying to arrest officer Zeferino Morales Franco when agent Daniel Cruz Garcia arrived at the scene and shot them from behind. The suspects remain at large.

He said Thursday that the government is offering a $360,000 reward leading to the officers' capture, who he described as "traitors."

Palomino says passengers would bring cocaine hidden in their body or luggage, and drop it off in bathrooms before reaching the immigration and customs check area. Corrupt officials would then circle back to pick up the drugs.

Debt crisis: Italy and Spain threaten to block 'everything' at tense EU summit

Arriving at the EU?s 19th eurozone crisis summit in the last two years, the French president opened hostilities with Germany by declaring himself to be on the side of Italy and Spain.

?I have come here to get very rapid solutions to support countries in the greatest difficulty on the markets even though they have made considerable efforts to restore their public finances,? said the French leader.

The rift between eurozone members widened when Mark Rutte, the Dutch prime minister, supported Germany. He said the only way Spain and Italy could emerge from the crisis was ?to bite the bullet? and to ?reform their labour markets, to make savings and reforms?.

Both Spain and Italy are vetoing any decisions until the eurozone shows them ?solidarity? because they have implemented EU austerity measures, but have still seen substantial increases in the cost of their government borrowing on the bond markets. On Thursday, Spanish bond yields passed the critical 7pc mark again.

EU officials have confirmed that the two countries had demanded the use of eurozone bail-out funds, worth ?740bn (?593bn), to buy new Spanish and Italian bonds to ease borrowing costs at debt auctions over the summer.

The moves have run into opposition from Germany ahead of a vote in the Bundestag parliament today, where Mrs Merkel requires a two-thirds majority of MPs to ratify the creation of a permanent eurozone bail-out fund.

In order to prevent a parliamentary rebellion over the new fund, which means an extra contribution of ?168bn from German taxpayers, Mrs Merkel insists that help for Italy or Spain be attached to strict conditions, seen as politically toxic in both Rome and Madrid.

The temperature of the debate was raised after a senior German official close to the chancellor poured scorn on the demands being made by the Italian and Spanish.

?We would warn against exaggerated scaremongering,? said the official.

Mario Monti, Italy?s technocrat prime minister, is demanding help to bring down borrowing costs currently at 6pc, near crisis point, in return for pushing through controversial pension and labour reforms.

Unless he can show progress, Mr Monti, could face a rebellion in the Italian parliament, tipping Italy into political turmoil that would deepen its borrowing problems, plunging the eurozone into its worst crisis yet.

Anna Paquin & Stephen Moyer Expecting Twins

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer could be pulling double duty in a couple of months and I am not talking about their work. Nope, word on the street is the couple is having twins. The True Blood stars confirmed the pregnancy back in April however, they have yet to confirm if the rumor that they will be blessed with two babies is true or not. Thanks to their co-star Sam Tramell the rumors are running ramped that it is twins for Paquin and Moyer. Sam told US Weekly that the set of the HBO hit show was becoming the twins set. Tramell has twins with his girlfriend Melissa Yager. Stephen and Anna however are keeping mum on this latest rumor. A rep for the actress has only responded by saying that Paquin is not discussing her pregnancy. So as of now we will just have to wait to see if she has one or two babies. I mean it would seem like Sam was talking about Anna and Stephen but you never know there could be like a crew member or someone who is h going to have twins, you just don?t know. Either way the world will know soon [...]

PFT: Players gave commish too much power, Ward says

8991124-largeAP

The two biggest stories of the offseason could have a common thread slightly thicker than the fact that both involve the Saints.

While there?s no obvious link between the bounty suspensions and the fact that quarterback Drew Brees still doesn?t have a contract, there?s a belief that Brees and former Saints linebacker Scott Fujita are experiencing retaliation for their roles in last year?s CBA talks.

As to Brees, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reports that the NFLPA recently has asked Commissioner Roger Goodell to explore whether the Saints are acting in good faith with respect to the Brees contract talks.? Per La Canfora, some within the union believe Brees? efforts last year in connection with the labor deal ?might be held against him.?? The union reportedly will file unfair labor practice charges, if the NFL does not investigate the situation.

As to Fujita, Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com speculates that the NFL?s inclusion of the Browns linebacker within the quartet of suspended players may reflect payback for Fujita?s ?outspoken? efforts in 2011, which included expressing concern about an 18-game regular season.? ?Fujita also questioned the league?s laxity in linking concussion injuries to long-term health effects,? Grossi writes.? ?In union meetings at which Goodell was present, Fujita was known for putting Goodell on spot with direct questions and refutations.?

It would be tough to prove bias based on their roles in the CBA talks, absent a smoking-gun admission from a league or team executive.? But merely pushing the issue could give the players an extra bit of leverage.

La Canfora reports that the NFLPA also is ?closely monitoring? the lack of negotiations with the Saints draft picks, a contention that seems ludicrous on its face.? For starters, the Saints have a small class, with no first-round or second-round pick.? Also, in past years few draft picks had been signed at this point in the offseason, and no one ever said ?boo? about it.? If the Saints rookies didn?t like the fact that the team wasn?t negotiating with them, the Saints rookies should have boycotted the offseason program.

Besides, why would the Saints gratuitously alienate their newest players?

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this specific situation comes from the lengths to which the NFLPA seems to be going to insulate Brees from any blame.

?The NFLPA opted to pursue this matter with Goodell on its own, and was not probed by Brees,? La Canfora said.? ?The quarterback did not play a role in the decision, sources said, with the union moving forward of its own accord.? NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith would not discuss the specifics of the matter but said the union was acting as it would to protect any member and that Brees did not have a say in any of the actions the union might take.?

Baloney, we say.

For starters, a union typically doesn?t push an issue that the affected player doesn?t want to push.? When it comes to Brees, who remains a member of the NFLPA?s Executive Committee, there?s no way union leadership would take action against his wishes, since he is part of union leadership.

So, yes, Brees looks to be behind this one.? And that?s fine; if he?s a victim of retaliation for his role in the labor talks, he has every right to seek relief.

But he also should be willing to acknowledge it.

Barklage's two goals lead Red Bulls?past United

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:04 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - A long trek to the scoring column for Brandon Barklage and Jan Gunnar Solli ended Sunday night with the defense-minded twosome accounting for all the goals in the Red Bulls' 3-2 win over D.C. United.

A franchise-record crowd of 25,187 witnessed Barklage, a defender waived last December by the same United squad he victimized for his first two MLS career goals, tie the game in the 20th minute, then put the Red Bulls up 2-1 in the second minute of first-half stoppage time.

The fans also saw Solli, who has alternated between midfield and defense this year, knock in the winner in the 55th minute for his first career goal in 43 MLS games.

Coach Hans Backe was hard-pressed to think of an unlikelier pair to provide the offense to what he termed the most complete game the Red Bulls (9-4-3) have played this year. His team moved into a first-place tie with United (9-5-3) in the East.

"When Barklage and Solli score, you have to win, probably," Backe said after his squad secured its 30th point and ran its mark to 6-1-2 over its last nine games.

Barklage played 11 of his 22 career MLS games with United before that team told him he "couldn't cut it" there and waived him last December. He got his first goal almost by accident in an action-packed first half when he flashed across the goalmouth to left-foot Joel Lindpere's low corner kick past keeper Bill Hamid.

"It was a great ball in, near post," said Barklage, whose goal followed a difficult opening in which D.C.'s Chris Pontius scored his franchise's fastest goal at 31 seconds. It was the second-fastest goal ever scored against the Red Bulls, coming a dozen seconds later than New England Revolution forward Jose Casela's goal at 19 seconds in 2005. "The ball came in my space and luckily I got a foot on it. I started celebrating right away."

Barklage put the Red Bulls up in the second minute of first-half stoppage time. Lurking on the right side, Barklage knocked in a one-time volley after Rafa Marquez's free kick, caused when D.C.'s Robbie Russell brought down Mehdi Ballouchy just outside the box. The free kick caromed high off the defensive wall.

"It took me four years to do it," said Barklage, who signed with the Red Bulls in February after trying out with assistant coach Mike Petke and playing in three preseason games in January. "There's a lot of history in D.C. for me. Luckily, they didn't come here and get a point or three points."

Solli saw to that in the 55th minute, putting in his own rebound of a shot off Lindpere's feed for a 3-1 lead.

"It was a long run for the first goal," Solli said. "A long time. It was nice to bury that. Now it's up to me to try to get into (scoring) positions. But it'll be nice to see the replay because I haven't done it."

Except for the first minute, the Red Bulls dominated the opening 55 minutes before wearing down over the final stretch, allowing United several good opportunities. Pontius tightened the score in the 66th minute with his second goal, his fifth this season against the Red Bulls thanks to his first career hat trick in their meeting April 22.

But the defense held. And the offense was dominant well into the second half.

"They were finding seams and we weren't too happy," Hamid said. "You could say we gave this game away in the first half. Once we score early like that, we've got to keep up the pressure and not let up because teams are going to punish us, especially on the road."

LeBron's triple-double lifts Heat to NBA title

Published: Friday, June 22, 2012 at 6:57 a.m.
Last Modified: Friday, June 22, 2012 at 6:57 a.m.

Not that one two summers ago, the welcoming rally where he boasted of multiple titles, perhaps without realizing how hard it would be to win just one.

He dreamed of this moment, with teammates surrounding him and the NBA championship trophy beside him.

"You know, my dream has become a reality now, and it's the best feeling I ever had," James said.

James had 26 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists, leading the Miami Heat in a 121-106 rout of the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night to win the NBA Finals in five games.

Ripped and ridiculed for the way he announced he was leaving Cleveland and taking his talents to South Beach, it's all worth it now for James.

Best player in the game. Best team in the league.

And now, NBA champion.

"I'm happy now that eight years later, nine years later since I've been drafted, that I can finally say that I'm a champion, and I did it the right way," James said. "I didn't shortcut anything. You know, I put a lot of hard work and dedication in it, and hard work pays off. It's a great moment for myself."

And for his teammates, who watched the Dallas Mavericks celebrate on their floor last year.

James left the game along with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh for good with 3:01 remaining for a round of hugs and the start for a party he's been waiting for since arriving in the NBA out of high school as the No. 1 pick of the 2003 draft. James hopped up and down in the final minutes, shared a long hug with opponent Kevin Durant, and then soaked in the "MVP! MVP! chants during the raucous postgame.

"I wanted to become a champion someday," James said. "I didn't know exactly when it would happen, but I put in a lot of hard work."

He was a choker last year, the guy who came up small in the fourth quarter, mocked for "shrinking" in the moment while playing with what he called "hatred" in trying to prove his critics wrong.

He came to Miami seeking an easier road to the finals but found it tougher than he expected, the Heat coming up empty last year and nearly getting knocked out in the Eastern Conference finals this time by Boston. Facing elimination there, James poured in 45 points on the road to force a Game 7 and the Heat won it at home.

"It was the hardest thing I've ever done as a basketball player," James said. "You just put a lot of hard work into it and you hope that one day it will pay off for you."

This time, with a chance to clinch, the Heat took control in the second quarter, briefly lost it and blew the game open again in the third behind their role players, James content to pass to wide-open 3-point shooters while the Thunder focused all their attention on him.

The disappointment of losing to Dallas in six games a year ago vanished in a blowout of the demoralized Thunder, who got 32 points and 11 rebounds from Durant.

Bosh and Wade, the other members of the Big Three who sat alongside James as he promised titles at his Miami welcoming party, both had strong games. Bosh, who wept as the Heat left their own court after losing Game 6 last year, finished with 24 points and Wade scored 20. The Heat also got a huge boost from Mike Miller, who made seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points.

That all made it easier for James, the most heavily scrutinized player in the league since his departure from Cleveland, when he announced he was "taking his talents to South Beach" on a TV special called "The Decision" that was criticized everywhere from water coolers to the commissioner's office. James has said he wishes he handled things differently, but few who watched the Cavs fail to assemble championship talent around him could have argued with his desire to depart.

In Miami he found a team that didn't need him to do it alone, though he reminded everyone during this sensational postseason run that he still could when necessary. He got support whenever he needed it in this series, from Shane Battier's 17 points in Game 2 to Mario Chalmers' 25 in Game 4.

In the clincher it was Miller, banged up from so many injuries that he limped from the bench to scorer's table when he checked in. He made his fourth 3-pointer of the half right before James' fast-break basket capped a 15-2 run that extended Miami's lead to 53-36 with 4:42 remaining in the first half.

The Thunder were making a remarkably early trip to the finals just three years after starting 3-29, beating the Mavericks, Lakers and Spurs along the way. With Durant, Russell Westbrook, Serge Ibaka and James Harden all 23 or younger, the Thunder have the pieces in place for a lengthy stay atop the Western Conference.

But their inexperience showed in this series, a few questionable decisions, possessions and outright mistakes costing them in their franchise's first finals appearance since Seattle lost to Chicago in 1996. Westbrook scored 19 but made only four of his 20 shots, unable to come up with anything close to his 43-point outing in Game 4, and Harden finished a miserable series with 19.

"It hurts, man," Durant said. "We're all brothers on this team and it just hurts to go out like this. We made it to the finals, which was cool for us, but we didn't want to just make it there. Unfortunately we lost, so it's tough."

Nothing they did could have stopped James, anyway.

Appearing fully recovered from the leg cramps that forced him to sit out the end of Game 4, he was dominant again, a combination of strength and speed that is practically unmatched in the game and rarely seen in its history.

Wade skipped to each side of the court before the opening tip with arms up to pump up the fans, then James showed them nothing wrong with his legs, throwing down an emphatic fast-break dunk to open the scoring. He made consecutive baskets while being fouled, showing no expression after the second, as if he'd hardly even known he was hit. Drawing so much attention from the Thunder, he started finding his wide-open shooters, and the Heat built a nine-point lead before going to the second up 31-26.

Oklahoma City got back within five early in the third before consecutive 3-pointers by Chalmers and Battier triggered a 27-7 burst that made it 88-63 on another 3-pointer by Miller. James didn't even score in the run until it was almost over, hitting a pair of free throws after he was flagrantly fouled by Derek Fisher while powering toward the basket.

Gone was the tentative player who was mocked for shrinking on the big stage last year, too willing to defer to others who didn't possess half his talents. This time, he was at peace off the court and attacking on it, vowing to have no regrets and playing in such a way they wouldn't be necessary.

Miami had outscored Oklahoma City by just 389-384 over the first four games, but the Thunder were buried under a barrage of 14 3-pointers, tying the NBA record.

"They just hit 3s after 3s. They got it going and we couldn't stop them," Thunder center Kendrick Perkins said. "Things just didn't go our way."

Notes: Miami became the third team to sweep the middle three games at home in the 2-3-2 format. The Detroit Pistons took all three from the Los Angeles Lakers in 2004 before the Heat did it against Dallas in 2006. ... Coach Erik Spoelstra tied Rick Riley for the Heat franchise record with his 34th postseason win. He is 34-22, while Riley was just 34-36. ... 4G iPad 3 slower than iPad 2 + mifi

Quote:

I have a Novotel 4510l mifi device with Verizon which I use with my ipad 2. I use it daily to connect to my iMac using Splashtop remote desktop. The performance is great via 4G with this setup. Using my friend's new iPad with 4G in the same location demonstrates noticeable lag within Splashtop when connecting to the same iMac. Basic network tests on the new 4G iPad show slightly faster upload and download speeds with slightly lower ping times than the iPad 2 + mifi device. What could be causing this worse performance with the 4G iPad?

Will the Microsoft Surface be Wi-Fi only?

According to a new report, the Microsoft Surface will be Wi-Fi only ? at least at first.?

We know a lot about the Surface already. For instance, we know it will have a 10.6-inch screen, a pair of cameras, and one of two versions of the forthcoming Windows 8 operating system. But we don't know what kind of antennas will be on board ? and in turn, what kind of Internet connections the Surface will support. 3G? 4G?

Try Wi-Fi only ? at least at first. According to Bloomberg News, which quotes two anonymous sources, the Surface will initially retail without 3G or 4G compatibility. (Bloomberg implies that Microsoft is leaving the window open for a 3G or 4G Surface down the road.) That could be a disadvantage for the Surface, a tablet intended to compete with a range of tablets, including the iPad, that sell in 4G and Wi-Fi-only versions.?

Right? Well, maybe not, James Kendrick of ZDNet suggests.?

"Indications are that Wi-Fi iPads are the choice of many mainstream consumers as most folks rarely use them outside of hotspots. The 3G/4G iPads sell in much smaller numbers, and then only because Apple has such good deals with the US carriers to keep them contract free," Kendrick writes. "Microsoft needs to make a big initial push to get the Surface into the home, not the workplace. Wi-Fi is all that is needed to make that happen."?

As Alexandra Chang of Wired notes, a recent study from NPD says a whopping 65 percent of users don't bother with anything more than a Wi-Fi connection. Count this blogger as one of those users. In the year that we've owned our iPad, we've had need of 3G service exactly once ? and that was only in an airport, where the Wi-Fi connection was inexplicably down.

So yes, Microsoft. Go Wi-Fi only. You have our blessing.

Friday a key deadline as Armstrong case ramps up

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Lance Armstrong faces a Friday deadline to file a formal response to the latest allegations that he was doping during his seven consecutive Tour de France victories.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency informed Armstrong on June 12 that it plans to bring charges that he used performance-enhancing drugs. If found guilty, Armstrong could ultimately be stripped of the Tour de France titles he won from 1999-2005.

Armstrong insists he is innocent and despite the deadline he isn't required to file a written response. The deadline is important, however, because now the case will be sent to a USADA review panel to determine whether there's enough evidence to warrant formal charges.

If it does, Armstrong could find himself before an arbitration panel to decide the matter by November.

Here's a look at a few of the questions surrounding Armstrong's case:

___

Q: Why didn't the Armstrong doping questions end in February when federal prosecutors closed a two-year criminal investigation without filing charges?

A: The federal probe was an investigation into financial fraud, not a question of whether Armstrong cheated as an athlete.

Armstrong hoped the end of the criminal investigation would end the doping questions. The latest allegations are that he used blood boosters, steroids and other improper performance enhancers and violated sports competition rules, not criminal law. Armstrong can't be put in jail if he's found guilty, but he can be stripped of his titles.

When the federal criminal probe ended, USADA officials warned they would continue investigating Armstrong and their level of proof required when presenting evidence is lower than the legal standard of "beyond a reasonable doubt." USADA officials insist their standard of proof is still very high.

Armstrong had suggested in recent interviews he expected charges to be filed and even hinted he may not fight them, saying he was tired of the battle. That would seem unlikely now given his tenacious determination to fight off previous doping allegations during his career.

___

Q: The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency sounds like a branch of the federal government. What is it?

A: Created in 2000, USADA is a nonprofit agency recognized by Congress as the official anti-doping police for U.S. Olympic-related athletes and sports. But it is not a law enforcement agency and does not have the power to bring criminal charges.

The U.S. Olympic Committee recommended creating the agency because its own drug-testing program lacked credibility. USADA is supported financially by the U.S. Olympic Committee and the federal government.

Part of USADA's mission is to not only catch cheaters but to help researchers create new, more sophisticated tests to keep up with evolving cheating techniques.

___

Q: What's at stake for Armstrong?

A: Everything.

From his Tour de France titles to his legacy as the cancer-fighting hero to his foundation that trades on his name to raise millions of dollars to help cancer survivors, it's all on the line.

After his 1999 Tour de France victory, Armstrong wrote a book, "It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life," that helped define him as an inspirational athlete who came back from the brink of death to beat cancer and dominate a grueling sport. Now he allegedly faces evidence that could taint his entire career on the bike.

Armstrong also has legions of fans around the globe due to his work fighting cancer. They may not care about doping in sports. But a formal ruling that he's a cheater, that it's not just innuendo and rumor, could be devastating and a disappointment for many.

___

Q: Doping allegations against Armstrong have gone nowhere before. Is there new evidence?

A: That's unknown. USADA says it has more than 10 former teammates willing to testify they either know Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs, told them he used them or encouraged their use on his teams. USADA also says it has blood samples from his 2009-10 comeback that show evidence "fully consistent" with blood doping.

USADA hasn't released witness names or the blood samples, despite a demand from Armstrong's attorneys to see them. USADA says it's keeping the names private to prevent retaliation or intimidation, raising speculation Armstrong will file a federal lawsuit to gain access.

Armstrong notes he's passed about 500 drug tests in his career. And in a letter to USADA last week, his attorneys noted the blood samples that allegedly indicate doping came from a time Armstrong passed all his drug tests.

Unlike other sports figures who have been sanctioned after positive drug tests, USADA's case against Armstrong appears to be built around the total weight off the alleged witness testimony and suspicious blood samples.

___

Q: Friday was a paperwork deadline. What happens next?

A: USADA submits its case to a three-person review board of technical, legal and medical experts. The panel reviews the evidence and recommends whether USADA has a strong enough case to pursue charges.

Presuming the case proceeds, it goes to a three-person arbitration panel. Armstrong picks one member, USADA picks another and those two arbitrators pick the third, who acts as the panel chairman. Once that happens, USADA will have to start turning evidence over to Armstrong and his lawyers to review.

Armstrong can contest the charges or accept them. If he challenges USADA, the case goes to a hearing before the arbitration panel where both sides can present evidence and cross-examine witnesses. Armstrong can elect to have an open hearing or keep it closed to the public.

Only one athlete, former cyclist Floyd Landis, a former Armstrong teammate who won the 2006 Tour de France and later tested positive for steroid use, chose to have an open hearing and he lost. He later became one of Armstrong's primary accusers.

Super-social spaceman shares his story

NASA via Twitpic

NASA astronaut Ron Garan looks into the camera from outside the International Space Station in July 2011. "Knocking on the door to come back in #FromSpace after yesterday's spacewalk," Garan wrote on Twitpic.

By Alan Boyle

You might think it's cool enough that NASA astronaut Ron Garan has spent months aboard the International Space Station, but he?s become even better-known as a social-media maven. This month he passed the 2 million mark for Google+ circles, putting him at No. 21 on the Google+ Top 100. His Fragile Oasis postings are a highlight on the Web, Facebook and Twitter. His "Ask Me Anything" exchange with Reddit users went so well he's thinking of doing it again.

So what's the secret to his success? It's really not a secret at all: He?s got a good story to share, about the beauty and fragility of planet Earth.

The 50-year-old New York native is a former Air Force fighter pilot who has degrees in business economics and aerospace engineering. He joined the astronaut corps in 2000, and his training for spaceflight included a turn as an "aquanaut" for NASA's NEEMO underwater research mission in 2006. Garan has been up in space twice ? in 2008, on the shuttle Discovery to help deliver Japan's Kibo lab to the International Space Station; and just last year for a nearly six-month tour of duty on the station.

Garan says another stint on the space station is "always a possibility, down the road." But right now, he's focusing on NASA's Open Government Initiative, which aims to build stronger collaborative ties between government, industry and the general public. That means social engagement isn't just something he does in his spare time. It's part of his job.

During a recent interview, Garan talked about how he became a super-social spaceman, and what he's learned from the adventure. Here are some edited excerpts of the Q&A:

Cosmic Log: When you come into contact with the public, what do you find they?re most curious about?

Garan:?"Well, what they?re most curious about is the basic question of what life is like, living in space. It really is a marvelous experience. It?s very interesting in a lot of respects ? and probably the greatest part about it is that it gave me an incredible sense of appreciation for what we have here on our planet. Everything from just simple things that define the beauty of life on our planet ? the breeze in your face, and the smell of flowers, watching a flock of birds and a million other things. After you?re up there for a while, those are things that?you really start to miss.

"I had the opportunity to have a short-duration flight on the space shuttle Discovery back in 2008, during which I was up there for two weeks, and then a long-term one where I was up for five and a half months. And it?s a very different experience. You have the same views, you have the same environment that you live in. But being able to see the earth, day in and day out, and watch the earth change ... and to really start to miss some of the things that I took for granted, that really gives you that appreciation."

Ron Garan / NASA

A fish-eye view of the International Space Station, captured by Ron Garan last July, features the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer in the foreground. A Russian Progress cargo ship and a Soyuz crew capsule are docked on the left end of the station. The structure extending to the left of the AMS is a thermal radiator. One of the station's gold-colored solar arrays is visible in the background. And off to the right, the shuttle Atlantis is docked to the station's Tranquility module.

Q: So how did the Fragile Oasis website enter into the mix?

A:?"That came out of my shuttle mission in 2008. I had a little bit of frustration. I imagine it?s like when you go to the Grand Canyon, and you?re there by yourself, and you sit there at the rim of the Grand Canyon and you?re looking out over this amazing thing. And imagine that very, very few people have been able to have that experience. For me, at least, that would be frustrating, and the experience would not be as rich as it would be if I had the opportunity to share that with people. So I was frustrated during my shuttle mission that I couldn?t share the experience.

"When I got assigned to my long-duration mission, there?s two and a half years of training, and during that two and a half years, I really brainstormed how I could do that. We came up with Fragile Oasis, not just to have it as a website where we could tell stories about space, but the goal was always to provide a platform for people to follow along on the mission, not as spectators but as fellow crew members. To have an interactive way to do it.

"We had some significant technical challenges in getting that thing off the ground, and it?s still a work in progress. It doesn?t have a lot of the interactive features that we wanted it to have, but we?re working on it. When I launched to the International Space Station, and I had the five and a half months up there, I really was very thankful that I had this tool, this platform, to be able to communicate. And in the meantime, we had the exponential increase in the popularity of social media tools.

"First I did Facebook, but I didn't see that as a public outreach tool. I saw that as a way to connect with old friends, and I was just using it on a personal basis. On the other hand, I started Twitter for one reason: I saw it as a way to do education outreach. I could say, I?m learning about this experiment we?re going to be doing in space, and I?d put a link on there to the experiment's website and the science behind it. I saw that as a very powerful way to do outreach. I now see the benefits of outreach in other platforms as well, including Facebook and obviously Google+. In the case of Google+, I see a very robust mechanism to share the space program and the experience of living in space with a lot of interactive features on that platform."

Q: With all your experience in social media, do you find that you favor one tool over the other? From your comments, it sounds as if you?re seeing some differentiation in how those different tools can be used. Particularly with Google+, you just recently passed the 2-million-follower mark. That must be one of the big successes for your efforts.

A:?"Well, I think all the platforms offer slightly different tools to tell the story. I think they all fit together really well, actually. So it?s not a 'one-platform' type of message. We want to reach the broadest audience we can, because the excitement of spaceflight is global. It?s for all humanity. So the more tools we can use to tell that story, and the more people we can get involved with the story, the better off the whole message will be."

Q: Did you have to do a selling job with NASA to do the sorts of things you?re doing?

A:?"It took a while to catch on, but it?s catching on now across the board. We realize the benefit of social media. I?m on some social-media committees now, on some working groups to help not only crew members and astronauts, but also thousands of other people who work in the space program. They have a very compelling story as well. We?re trying to find the best way to get that story out. And what we?re finding is that just letting people tell their story in the way they want to tell it is the best way to do it.

"Obviously, there have to be guidelines. But the more leeway we can give people in the space program to tell their story, the richer the experience will be, both for the people who are reading it and for the people who are doing it. That?s one of the cardinal rules here, to give people as much leeway as we possibly can."

Q: Are there any guidelines or favorites that you want to pass along to people who want to be closer in touch with the space adventure?

A:?"Oh, yeah. There are tons and tons of people. Most of the astronauts who fly in space right now have Twitter accounts. They?re all on there. There?s also @NASA_Astronauts, where we try to retweet, as best we can, everything from all the astronauts. There?s @NASA, the official Twitter account. There?s the Facebook version, and soon the Google+ version of all these as well. There?s commercial spaceflight: @SpaceX has a social media presence. There are people outside the space agency who are involved in telling the story as well, such as @YurisNight and #spacetweeps.

"What we?re finding through this is that it?s not just the official word from NASA, the European Space Agency and the Japanese space agency. There are citizen scientists and all these other groups that have formed around the idea of space exploration, and they really do a great job of telling the story as well. It?s obvious that there?s a lot of passion and heart and soul that?s put into this."

Q: Is there something about the space story that particularly resonates with social media?

A:?"I think it?s because it?s a human endeavor, and throughout the 50 years of human spaceflight, it?s always been a select few people who have gotten to fly in space, and we?ve relied on them to come back and tell us what it was like. Now, through technology and through these new platforms, we can bring people along with us on the missions and have them experience this is real time. You can see example after example of this.

"An easy example is, if one of us sends out a tweet with a picture, let?s say, and we misidentify the geographic location, we?re going to find out about that pretty fast. That happened to me on my mission, and I thanked the person who brought that to my attention. I started sending pictures to that person first, to make sure I got it right. We don?t have a lot of time up there, and all the pictures and all the social media that we do is in our free time. So to have people on the ground, crowdsourcing or open-sourcing or however you want to put it, that really empowers us to do more. It makes communication much more effective."

Q: Have you ever thought if it would be possible to boil down the glory of space down into one tweet? Is there any elevator talk you?ve thought about giving in 140 characters, about what it?s like to fly in space?

A:?"You?d need at least 147 characters to do that ... no. I know I couldn?t do it. That would be a pretty remarkable feat."

Q: What?s the one thing that you?d like people to know about spaceflight.

A:?"In 140 characters?"

Q: Not 140 characters, but what?s the one biggest message that you think the space experience provides for people on Earth?

A:?"Well,? to go back to the reason we started Fragile Oasis: The really compelling reason is that we wanted to use this perspective we have on the planet to inspire people to go out and make a difference, and make the world a better planet. The one gift that I think we get when we fly in space is this perspective.

"You don't necessarily have to be in space to get this perspective, but being in space really reinforces it: You see how fragile the planet is. You see how beautiful it is, how peaceful it looks. Then you realize that life is not as beautiful for everybody on the planet as it looks from space. That's a very compelling thing to experience, and hopefully it serves as a call to action, to not accept the status quo and make life on the planet as beautiful as it looks. That's the No. 1 thing that I want to get across."

NASA

The International Space Station looks like little more than a speck with solar panels in this picture, which was taken from the shuttle Atlantis during its approach on July 10. A first-quarter moon shines on the right side of the frame.

Where in the Cosmos
Garan and his colleagues at Fragile Oasis offer a cornucopia of outer-space imagery and blog postings, including this picture of the International Space Station and the moon, as seen from the shuttle Atlantis during its approach for docking last July. The photo served as today's quiz picture in the "Where in the Cosmos" contest, presented weekly on the Cosmic Log Facebook page.

Len Whitney's comment was my favorite: "I believe it's a TIE fighter ... but those are short-range fighters, we're too far out in space ... Must have taken off from that moon ... Wait a second ... that's no moon!!!! It's a space station!"

For figuring out so quickly that the picture showed a moon and a space station, I'm sending 3-D glasses to Facebook followers Matt Jaworski and Lawrence Johnson. I'm also reserving a pair for Whitney. To make sure you're in on next week's contest, click the "like" button on the Cosmic Log Facebook page and join the alliance. It's not a trap!
