Ghostly gamma-ray beams blast from Milky Way's center

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? As galaxies go, our Milky Way is pretty quiet. Active galaxies have cores that glow brightly, powered by supermassive black holes swallowing material, and often spit twin jets in opposite directions. In contrast, the Milky Way's center shows little activity. But it wasn't always so peaceful. New evidence of ghostly gamma-ray beams suggests that the Milky Way's central black hole was much more active in the past.

"These faint jets are a ghost or after-image of what existed a million years ago," said Meng Su, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), and lead author of a new paper in the Astrophysical Journal.

"They strengthen the case for an active galactic nucleus in the Milky Way's relatively recent past," he added.

The two beams, or jets, were revealed by NASA's Fermi space telescope. They extend from the galactic center to a distance of 27,000 light-years above and below the galactic plane. They are the first such gamma-ray jets ever found, and the only ones close enough to resolve with Fermi.

The newfound jets may be related to mysterious gamma-ray bubbles that Fermi detected in 2010. Those bubbles also stretch 27,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way. However, where the bubbles are perpendicular to the galactic plane, the gamma-ray jets are tilted at an angle of 15 degrees. This may reflect a tilt of the accretion disk surrounding the supermassive black hole.

"The central accretion disk can warp as it spirals in toward the black hole, under the influence of the black hole's spin," explained co-author Douglas Finkbeiner of the CfA. "The magnetic field embedded in the disk therefore accelerates the jet material along the spin axis of the black hole, which may not be aligned with the Milky Way."

The two structures also formed differently. The jets were produced when plasma squirted out from the galactic center, following a corkscrew-like magnetic field that kept it tightly focused. The gamma-ray bubbles likely were created by a "wind" of hot matter blowing outward from the black hole's accretion disk. As a result, they are much broader than the narrow jets.

Both the jets and bubbles are powered by inverse Compton scattering. In that process, electrons moving near the speed of light collide with low-energy light, such as radio or infrared photons. The collision increases the energy of the photons into the gamma-ray part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The discovery leaves open the question of when the Milky Way was last active. A minimum age can be calculated by dividing the jet's 27,000-light-year length by its approximate speed. However, it may have persisted for much longer.

"These jets probably flickered on and off as the supermassive black hole alternately gulped and sipped material," said Finkbeiner.

It would take a tremendous influx of matter for the galactic core to fire up again. Finkbeiner estimates that a molecular cloud weighing about 10,000 times as much as the Sun would be required.

"Shoving 10,000 suns into the black hole at once would do the trick. Black holes are messy eaters, so some of that material would spew out and power the jets," he said.

Property developers buying up land amid slowing real estate market in

Research analysts and property consultants have mixed views about developers that have been buying sizeable parcels of land recently, as the real estate market has slowed down and prices are relatively reasonable.

?It is a good time to acquire land when the market is slow. Some property developers may just be able to get a bargain price for their purchases,? said property consultancy CB Richard Ellis (M) Sdn Bhd executive director Paul Khong.

Khong told StarBiz via e-mail that real estate sellers would also be more realistic concerning prices, as there were not too many buyers around.

He pointed out that the property sector was moving slowly back to a ?buyer's market? and the principle of ?cash is king? would rule again.

In recent months, property developers such as Mah Sing Group Bhd, SP Setia Bhd, WCT Bhd and Hua Yang Bhd have been actively expanding their land bank particularly in the Klang Valley.

Last week, Mah Sing announced that it was paying RM333.26mil or RM18.55 per sq ft for 412 acres targeted for a mixed township near Bangi, Selangor.

SP Setia recently acquired 21.3 acres freehold land in Penang for RM185.6mil, and said this was for a mixed residential development project with a gross development value (GDV) of RM1.1bil.

Meanwhile, WCT recently acquired two parcels of 468 acres and 57 acres in the Klang Valley.

WCT executive director Choe Kai Keong had told StarBiz that the land costing RM450mil has a potential GDV of RM5.2bil.

The 468 acres in Rawang, Selangor would be developed into an integrated township with an estimated GDV of RM1.2bil, while the 57-acre in Overseas Union Garden in Kuala Lumpur is planned for a mixed development worth RM4bil.

Hua Yang also has been acquiring small parcels of land in the Klang Valley since last year.

Hua Yang, which is known for developing residential properties in the affordable segment, recently agreed to pay RM15.2mil for 21 acres of freehold land in Ipoh, Perak.

?Prices and sales of properties have obviously slowed down in 2012 as the number of buyers has been halved, with stricter bank lending guidelines. This is rather sensitive in the mid-high and high-end segments (such as above the RM3mil category) of the residential market,? said Khong.

Khong said property developers were now moving quickly to look at larger land banks to develop new projects, and were looking at cheaper locations where there was still demand from the mass market in the mid and lower-mid sections.

?Landed properties especially in the RM2mil and below categories should still do relatively well, as investors will still continue their quest but at a slightly lower segments.?

He also noted that the recent land sales were centred in secondary locations outside the city centre, but were in reasonably ?good locations? and were in respect of big parcels where the developers could develop the ?evergreen? landed segments again.

Khong pointed out that regardless of market conditions, property developers needed to take a long term view about their land bank.

?They have to continue to acquire land and develop, to sustain their operations and cover overhead costs.?

However, one property analyst contacted by StarBiz said there were concerns that developers might be too aggressive in expanding their land bank.

?In good times, when the property market is hot, developers can increase their gearing without much worry as they can launch and sell properties quickly. Now, the market has cooled and they should be careful about increasing their gearing too much,? he said.

Maybank Investment Bank (IB) Research said in a recent report that it took a neutral view of SP Setia's recent land buy in Penang.

?Despite its strategic location, the RM200 per sq ft land cost (in Penang) appeared to be on the high side. It is 33% to 60% higher than the RM125 to RM150 per sq ft asking or transacted prices in the area.?

However, Maybank IB noted that SP Setia's net gearing was still very healthy, as this was expected to increase to 0.14 times post-acquisition of the Penang land (from 0.08 times as at January 2012).

Meanwhile, Kenanga Research said it took a neutral view of Mah Sing's recent land buy near Bangi as the deal is expected to result in the company's net gearing reaching 0.6 times (from the 0.3 times in the fourth quarter of 2011), based on an assumed 70:30 debt-equity financing.

?This has exceeded our comfort level of 0.5 times net gearing,? said the research unit.

However, Kenanga Research said Mah Sing's expected net gearing of 0.6 times is manageable amd should fall below 0.5 times over the next two quarters, on the back of continuous billings.

Priest apologizes for dropping f-bomb on Facebook

I hear the fizz of tonic in my gin beckoning," Canon Paul Shackerley, vicar of the Minster Church of St. George in Doncaster in northern England, wrote in one Facebook post noted in an anonymous letter to Church of England officials.

In another, Shackerley posted, "Alas, I have religion tomorrow. At least I?m not preaching this week. Preaching next week at St Mary Abbotts [sic] Kensington though. Best make that a good one eh?"

There was more.

"P--- myself! H, you are so funny!!!," read one of Shackerley's comments on a friend's Facebook post. "It was good to share over lunch yesterday and at the URC Homelessness 'event?. I say 'event?. It was hardly worship, was it? I hope you managed to get home okay. It was late by the time the URC [United Reformed Church] and Methodists finished. Good job we are Anglicans eh?"

Shackerley also posted photo of himself posing with a snowman, accompanied by the caption, "Forgive my sin of frivolity. Sin is such fun! But I haven?t been having an inappropriate relationship with Snowy, who can longer be called a 'snowman? in the name of political correctness."

According to the Telegraph, copies of the posts were sent to church leaders in an anonymous letter that read in part:

"Your priest colleague uses language that most would find abhorrent for a man in his position.

"His present behaviour makes him totally unfit to serve the minster or the people of Doncaster, and totally unfit to serve the Church at all in the opinion of many Doncaster residents."

Shackerley met with a senior church official on Friday, and officially apologized in a letter, the Associated Press reports. "I have received Paul's letter of apology and have been assured that this will not happen again and that we can now draw a line under this matter," Bishop Peter Burrows said.

In April, Shackerley wrote in a newsletter, "I have known employees (to) receive disciplinary and dismissal notices for inappropriate postings." Now Shackerley serves as model to his congregation, though probably not in the way he had hoped.

Once rare UK butterflies have been moving further north due to a pattern of hot summers, say researchers.

The brown argus, one of Britain's smallest butterflies, was limited to sun-loving shrubs on chalk grassland.

But since the 1990s the species has been expanding its range, using different plants to host their eggs.

Scientists from the University of York attribute this to rising summer temperatures.

Analysing records made by volunteers with the charity Butterfly Conservation, Rachel Pateman and colleagues at the University of York and the NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology identified that populations of the butterfly have spread 79km (49 miles) further north in 20 years.

"The butterfly is now present throughout much of the south and east of England as far north as South and East Yorkshire," explained Ms Pateman whose study was published in the journal Science.

"This is unusual for species which are considered fairly scarce and specialised and so we were interested to discover what might have caused this rapid range expansion."

The amateur records held another clue for researchers as the butterflies seemed to have broadened their taste in host plants. In the past the insects only fed upon rockrose, now their tastes include Geraniums such as dove's-foot cranesbill.

"Warm summers have benefited the brown argus butterfly by allowing it to become less picky," Ms Pateman told BBC Nature.

"The Geranium species used are very widespread in the landscape and so this has enabled the rapid expansion of the butterfly."

According to the scientists, rising summer temperatures are responsible for the warmth-loving butterflies' success.

Their investigation of climate data for the UK identified the link: summer temperatures from 1990 to 2009 were on average 0.78% warmer than previous summers, dating back to 1800.

"We think the brown argus was previously restricted to using rockrose because it grows in places with particularly warm microclimates and therefore was suitable when conditions were particularly cool," Ms Pateman said, explaining that the yellow-flowered shrub is typically found in "short turf on southerly-facing slopes."

"Geranium species, however, tend to grow in cooler places and so were unsuitable for brown argus when the climate was cooler," she said.

"As temperatures have increased we think the locations where Geranium species grow have now become warm enough for the brown argus."

Researchers focussed on the counties of Suffolk and Bedfordshire in their study, where recording the orange spotted wings of the brown butterflies is particularly popular.

"There has been an increase in recording over the years. However, when methods have been used to control for this, an increase in the distribution of brown argus is still found," said Ms Pateman.

"The records submitted by volunteers are an extremely valuable resource, without which the detection of long-term patterns like this would not be possible."

Gov't taking new steps to combat food stamp fraud

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Food stamp recipients are ripping off the government for millions of dollars by illegally selling their benefit cards for cash ? sometimes even in the open, on eBay or Craigslist ? and then asking the government for replacement cards.

The Agriculture Department wants to curb the practice by giving states more power to investigate people who repeatedly claim to lose their benefit cards.

It is proposing new rules Thursday that would allow states to demand formal explanations from people who seek replacement cards more than three times a year. Those who don't comply can be denied further cards.

"Up to this point, the state's hands have been tied unless they absolutely suspected fraudulent activity," said Kevin Concannon, the department's undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services.

Overall, food stamp fraud costs taxpayers about $750 million a year, or 1 percent of the $75 billion program that makes up the bulk of the department's total budget for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Most fraud occurs when unscrupulous retailers allow customers to turn in their benefits cards for lesser amounts of cash. But USDA officials are also concerned about people selling or trading cards in the open market, including through websites.

Last year, the department sent letters urging eBay and Craigslist to notify customers that it's illegal to buy and sell food stamps. USDA officials followed up last month, saying they are still getting complaints that people are using the websites to illegally market food stamps.

Both eBay and Craigslist have told the government they are actively reviewing their sites for illegal activity and would take down ads offering food stamp benefits for cash. The USDA also has warned Facebook and Twitter about the practice.

South Dakota, Oklahoma, Washington, D.C., Minnesota and Washington state have the highest percentage of recipients seeking four or more replacement cards over a year. But USDA officials said that doesn't necessarily indicate a high rate of fraud. All states are required by law to reissue lost or stolen cards to those who are eligible for benefits.

Wyoming, Idaho, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Alabama have the lowest percentage of households requesting four or more cards in a 12-month period.

In North Carolina, the state already issues warning letters to people who request four replacement cards in a year, letting them know that officials are monitoring them closely. Dean Simpson, chief of economic family services for the North Carolina Division of Social Services, said the new rules would give her state even more of a boost in curbing food stamp fraud.

"I think it would help with the trafficking and let individuals know they are being observed and watched," said Simpson, who oversees the state's distribution of food stamps.

More than 46 million people receive food stamps, nearly half of them children. The average monthly benefit is $132 per person.

Benefit cards work like debit cards, allowing users to swipe them for food purchases at some 231,000 stores around the country that are authorized to take part in the food stamp program. Once a card is reported lost or stolen, it can be disabled immediately. But the USDA does not require photo identification, since several members of a family, including children, may use the cards at different times.

Concannon stressed that the USDA wants to be sensitive to vulnerable people who may lose their cards for innocent reasons. While it may sound suspicious for someone to lose a card two or three times a year, food stamp recipients include many people who are homeless or have dementia or mental illness, he said.

"Our concern is that in many instances, it may point to a trafficking issue," he said.

Last year, about 850,000 people were investigated for possible food stamp fraud. About 2,000 stores were sanctioned for illegal conduct, and 1,200 stores were permanently removed from the food stamp program.

Large supermarkets are seldom involved in illegal activity, Concannon said. The vast majority of fraud is found in smaller shops and convenience stores.

The USDA is currently developing tougher sanctions and penalties for retailers engaging in food stamp fraud. It is also taking steps to make sure that people disqualified from the program for illegal activity are not able to use it again in other states.
